The Great Legacy Debate

The great legacy debate

The legacy journey from I might, to I can, to I will and I have.

Featuring Professor Russell James (see his amazing biography below) and Richard Radcliffe (see his totally underplayed biog on this website!)

Russell and Richard have tracked, surveyed or met over 50,000 legacy prospects.

Russell has pioneered the use of MRI scans to find out the science behind decision making and legacy giving.

Richard sits with donors, volunteers and service users every week and his mind is blown away by their honesty and the issues facing our best prospects,

The legacy marketplace is at a fascinating period when up to 1 in 3 people are saying they are going to remember a charity in their Will. But Will they?

Russell and Richard want to debate what REALLY gets people to do it rather than just think about it. We will debate decision making, use of language and the best call to action. We will probably argue nicely, we would love you to join in.

This is no airy fairy debate: it defines our strategies for the future.

The greatest call to action is still relatively under researched and certainly unproven. Come and participate in the debate and let’s find a way of securing more legacies.

The Great Legacy Debate is being held on:

3rd July 2015 10.00am to 1pm including welcome tea/coffee, a light lunch and refreshments

Location: NCVO 8 All Saints Road London N1 9 RL

Russell James, J.D., Ph.D., CFP® is a professor in the Department of Personal Financial Planning at Texas Tech University.  He holds the CH Foundation Chair in Personal Financial Planning and directs the on-campus and online graduate program in Charitable Financial Planning.  Additionally, he teaches Charitable Gift Planning at the Texas Tech University School of Law.  He graduated, cum laude, from the University of Missouri School of Law where he was a member of the Missouri Law Review. While in law school he received the United Missouri Bank Award for Most Outstanding Work in Gift and Estate Taxation and Planning. He also holds a Ph.D. in consumer economics from the University of Missouri, where his dissertation was on charitable giving.  His research focuses on uncovering practical and neuro-cognitive methods to encourage generosity in financial decision-making and he previously taught a graduate course in fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) design and analysis for the Texas Tech Neuroimaging Institute.

Prior to his career as an academic researcher, Dr James worked as the Director of Planned Giving for Central Christian College in Moberly, Missouri for 6 years and later served as president of the college for more than 5 years, where he had direct and supervisory responsibility for all fundraising. During his presidency the college successfully completed two major capital campaigns, built several new debt-free buildings, and more than tripled enrolment.

Dr.James has published in over 150 academic journals, conference proceedings, and books. These predominantly focus on statistical analysis and neuroimaging analysis related to gifts, estates, and property.  He has been quoted on charitable and financial issues in a variety of news sources including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, ABC News, U.S. News & World Report, USA Today, the Associated Press, Bloomberg News and the Chronicle of Philanthropy and his financial neuroimaging research was profiled in The Wall Street Journal’s Smart Money Magazine.
